Cancer is a terrible illness that takes the lives of far too many people each year. Just a few days ago, we were saddened to hear of the untimely passing of our friend, colleague and favourite cannabis athlete, Elias Theodorou. On Sunday, September 11, 2022, Elias passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his loved ones. He had privately been battling colon cancer, while still continuing to do his tireless work in fighting the stigma around cannabis use. Elias was a passionate and fierce advocate of greater access to medicinal cannabis, and worked hard to break barriers surrounding its use in professional sports. We are humbled to have known and worked with Elias, and proud to have been along for part of his journey in life.
In an effort to honour Elias’ memory, and to pay tribute to every individual whose life was taken too soon from cancer, we at CAFE will be participating in this year’s Terry Fox Run in CityPlace this Sunday, September 18, 2022. Terry Fox is a household name in Canada by now – 18 year old Terry lost his leg to osteogenic sarcoma, underwent 16 months of treatment and then decided to run across Canada in order to raise funds and awareness around cancer research. His incredible journey totaled 5,373 km over 143 days, and raised 1.7 million dollars. He passed away at the age of 22, in 1981. To date, more than 850 million has been raised in Terry’s name, via the Terry Fox run that takes place in major cities across Canada every year.
This Sunday, September 18, 2022, CAFE will be volunteering at the Terry Fox Run taking place in downtown Toronto. We will be stationed at Canoe Landing Park, where the 5k run will commence and end. Come find our CAFE booth in the park – we will be serving up cold-brew coffee all morning!
